How the calculator works
The first year of a dog or cat counts as 15 human years. The second year adds 9, so a 2-year-old is 24. After that a cat adds 4 human years per year, and a dog adds 4, 5, 6 or 7 depending on size: small, medium, large or giant.
Dog and cat age in human years
| Pet age | Cat | Small dog | Large dog |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| 2 years | 24 | 24 | 24 |
| 5 years | 36 | 36 | 42 |
| 10 years | 56 | 56 | 72 |
| 15 years | 76 | 76 | 102 |
Is one dog year 7 human years?
No. Seven is a rough average. Dogs grow up fast in year one, and big dogs age faster than small ones, so a 10-year-old Lab is older in human years than a 10-year-old Chihuahua.
